karstic woodland

Formerly the Karst was covered by forests of oaks, which, as a result of logging and grazing carried out for hundreds of years, have gradually been destroyed. Of these ancient forests now remain only some fragments such as Val Rosandra Lanaro and Mt.
This type of forest in the tree layer is dominated by Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea) and, in the herbaceous layer, Autumn Moor Grass (Sesleria autumnalis). Other species that accompany this formation are mainly acidophilous species such as Chestnut (Castanea sativa) and several species of broom (German Broom Genista germanica, G. pilosa and Dyers’ Greenweed G. tinctoria).
These species indicate that the forest in question lies on acidified soils, represented by flysch (marls and sandstones), or terra rossa clay, the insoluble residue from the chemical solution of limestone.
