Amphibian shelter

There are countless causes that threaten amphibians, animals that need both a terrestrial and an aquatic environment free of pollution, predators and invasive alien species. More than 30% of all amphibian species are considered endangered, and climate change will jeopardise their survival even more. This is why every form of help for these species is important, and artificial shelters placed near water bodies are being introduced in various nature parks both to provide easily accessible shelter for the animals and to facilitate their monitoring. Stacks of dry boulders of different sizes or carefully stacked piles of wood provide an ideal place for these animals, which outside their breeding season seek shelter out of the water. During the winter months, they need an appropriate place to hibernate, which except in some cases is carried out on dry land using places that provide protection from predators and appropriate thermal insulation. At Carsiana, it was decided some time ago to leave small piles of dead wood in certain places in the garden to provide shelter and sustenance for amphibians and other animals, and in 2023 we have built a more structured shelter that blends into the environment but allows the animals to find suitable shelter during the winter months.
